Cri-Du-Chat
Description:
Cri-Du-Chat is when chromosome 5 is missing (5p-). Infants who tend to have this disorder tend to have a high pitch cry some describe as the cry of a cat, this cry is caused by problems with the larynx and nervous system. This cry identifies the syndrome. About 1/3 of children lose the cry by age two.

Inheritance:
This disorder cannot be inherited.
It randomly happens during formation of reproductive cells or early fetal development.
Symptoms
  • Difficulty swallowing or sucking
  • Behavior problems; hyperactivity, aggressive, tantrums
  • Speech difficulty
  • Distinct Facial Features

Treatment
No treatments are available for cri-du-chat syndrome but care is very supportive,

Incidence:
1 of 200,000-500,000 newborns are affected with this syndrome.
